I am delighted to introduce Harvey Flowers! I had the pleasure of meeting him at Washburn University, where I was immediately impressed by his passion for biology and his genuine spirit. Harvey is truly an exceptional individual. Let's delve right in. Not only does Harvey possess a remarkable talent for art, but he has also garnered recognition by winning numerous art contests. His journey in ceramics began in 2015 after he chose it as an elective at WU.

Harvey draws inspiration from the wonders of nature and biology. His work is also influenced by his personal experiences as a member of the LGBTQ plus community, reflecting his unique journey with identity and sexuality. However, at the core of each piece lies a profound exploration of science and biology.

His creative process incorporates hand-building techniques. He starts by using slabs to construct primary forms and then sculpts the surfaces to unveil the essence of his figurative sculptures. Currently, he is experimenting with brown clay and beige slip to create the illusion of skin color, which aids in establishing identity. The clay symbolizes critical features of human identity while elevating physiological aspects. Furthermore, he employs slip-casting techniques and custom molds to replicate his work. His artistic focus revolves around gestures, which serve as a means of enhancing the emotion and individuality of each piece.Harvey aspires to touch people's hearts with the profound humanity in his art. Despite initial struggles with wheel-thrown ceramics, he persevered instead of dropping it. His first pot dramatically flew off the wheel, adhering to the wall. Today, he teaches ceramics and cherishes a life intertwined with clay. The journey, though challenging, has rewarded him with the ability to make a lasting impact.

Harvey revealed that, like many artists, he invests a substantial amount of time honing his craft. He shared the countless frustrating evenings spent in his studio but now finds himself at a juncture where the realm of possibilities seems boundless. He emphasizes the significance of finding the perfect workspace as an essential component of the creative process. For Harvey, Fire Me Up Ceramics embodies that ideal place.

Harvey believes that sculpture represents the epitome of skill, presenting the most formidable challenge in his journey with ceramics. Initially, he employed a method where he crafted solid pieces, hollowed them out, and reassembled them, a process fraught with the risk of cracking. Then, he discovered Cristina Cordova's approach, which utilizes slabs and templates reminiscent of those employed by dressmakers to adorn the human form.

He attributes his profound influences to exceptional professors and mentors: Glena Taylor, Monette Mark, Marguerite Perret, and the revered ceramic maestro Cristina Cordova. Notably, he recently parted ways with his most cherished masterpiece, which found a new home with the distinguished Vanessa German. Behold the captivating male bust depicted below.
